The day before we travelled we were all very excited and I don’t think anyone got much sleep that night. We had to be at the school at 4a.m., which meant getting up at around 3am!! We all then got on the coach and waved our parents goodbye and shortly after we arrived at Liverpool Airport. Checking in took some time but once we got past security we were given time to go shopping and spend some money. It was a bit of a rush when getting on the plane but it was exciting. It was a 2 hour journey to Spain and it was the first time that some students in our group had flown. After we landed, we had a two hour coach journey to the hotel and by this time everyone was getting a little restless and having a sleep on the way.
The hotel was really nice. We were shown to our rooms then given time to unpack and claim our beds! It was then time for lunch when everybody tried new foods which were surprisingly nice. We all met after lunch and decided to go to the beach; It was literally two minutes away so it was easy to access. The beach looked lovely! Everyone was enjoying themselves, playing in the sand and playing games and paddling in the sea. It was quite peaceful but the locals were giving us strange looks because we were all in tops, T-shirts and shorts, thinking it was warm when it really wasn’t.
We got back and we had some free time before we had to go for tea. After that I think everybody wanted to get an early night because we were all exhausted. In the morning we had breakfast then headed down to the language school for our Spanish lessons. The school was a 20 minute walk away and the walk was really pleasant as the weather was nice and there was a lovely view of the sea. On the way we came across an amazing sand-castle which an artist had made so we all wanted to stop and take pictures.
The lessons were better than we expected them to be and we all learnt quite a lot and some people were even confident enough to stop and chat with a few locals on the way back to the hotel. Later on that day we visited the Dali museum which was like no museum that we had ever seen before! We then broke up into groups to take a look around the museum. The art was very creative and original. There was a gift shop there as well but it was quite expensive so everyone bought just a little souvenir to remind them of their visit.
Back in the hotel, after our evening meal, we noticed some people dancing on the dance floor so a bunch of us decided to give it a try. We totally embarrassed ourselves but I don’t think anybody cared. By the end of the night pretty much everybody was on the dance floor...even the teachers! We then called an end to the night because we were all sweating and exhausted, we all knew it was going to be a LONG day tomorrow.
It was an early start to the day because we were taking a tour around Barcelona and it was going to take two hours just to get there. The journey went quite quickly and everyone was wide awake so there was lots of singing, led by Mr. Pendlebury! We met our tour guide in Barcelona city centre and she pointed out lots of the historical sites of Barcelona and gave us brief descriptions. We got off the coach to visit the Sagrada Familia cathedral, designed by Gaudi, which is absolutely amazing and which won’t be finished for another fifteen years, although they started building it a hundred years ago.
After that we went for a tour of a park that Gaudi had also designed and then moved on to the Olympic Stadium where we had our lunch. After this we had time to shop in a lovely department store where we were able to buy souvenirs. We then took to the coach to the Nou Camp, Barcelona’s fantastic football stadium where we visited the dressing rooms, walked down the tunnel on to the pitch area and sat in the stands to get a brilliant view of the pitch. We then visited the museum and then went to the shop where lots of us bought Barcelona shirts.
It had been a great day but, by now, everyone was pretty tired and it didn’t help when the coach broke down for half an hour but it was quite amusing. We got back to the hotel around 8pm and went straight for our meal. Everyone was pretty exhausted so headed to bed with not much effort.
The next day was pretty relaxed. We walked to the language school in warm sunshine. After lunch in the hotel, we set off for the seaside village of Cadaqués. It was quite scary on the bus because of the steep cliff edges right next to us and the twisting corners and with such a big coach, we thought we were going straight over the edge! The village was very pretty and peaceful, with a beach and a few souvenir shops and cafés. As always, some of us bought souvenirs (!) and then we started skimming rocks on the sea, having a competition to see who could get the most and the highest was 7.
When we got back, everyone made an effort to look nice because it was the last night. We went down for tea then went into a room where there were prizes and games. We finished off the evening with dancing and singing to YMCA and the Macarena and we were quite sad because it would be our last night at the hotel.
The final day came. I think everybody was looking forward to seeing their families again and giving them their presents but the shopping was not quite finished so once again we made that 20 minute walk to Rosas to where some shops where located. It was a short trip but long enough for people to buy what the needed. When we got back, we had lunch then packed our suitcases into the coach and headed off to the airport. It was much quicker checking in and getting through security at Barcelona so we got on our plane in no time. It was quite late by this time so I think most people fell asleep on the plane. Our flight came to an end and we made our final coach journey back to Rainford where our parents greeted us. It was a great trip and I would definitely recommend it!
